Abstract

Gypsum is a mineral of natural origin that has been used for centuries. Gypsum materials in the field of dentistry can be used to create models of the oral cavity and maxillofacial structures and as an important tool for dental laboratory work in making dentures. Chemically, the gypsum used in dentistry is pure calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O), which is generally modified in dentistry to suit a number of different uses. Gypsum in dentistry is classified into 5 types based on the American Dental Association (ADA) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Type III gypsum is commonly known as dental stone. Type III gypsum has advantages in setting time, compressive strength, material strength and resistance to abrasion, setting expansion, dimensional stability over a long period of time, and can form a detailed part of the tooth model. Gypsum type IV Dental Stone, High Strength Gypsum type IV is often known as die stone because type IV gypsum is very suitable for making wax patterns for restorations, generally used as a die in inlays, crowns and bridges for artificial teeth. Gypsum is used in dentistry to create study and working models of the oral cavity and cranio-facial structures and as an important tool for dental laboratory work involving the fabrication of dental prostheses.
